I took this picture of a very enthusiastic group of 4th Graders who were more than excited about a toad they found trapped in one of the fish raceways.

A 4th Grader is a 4th Grader is a 4th Grader…..

I took this picture of a very enthusiastic group of 4th Graders who were more than excited about a toad they found trapped in one of the fish raceways. Postville Elementary students make an annual May trip to Big Spring Hatchery for an aquatic educational program I give them. They are a fun and energetic group of one of the most culturally diverse and family oriented groups of kids that come here. They are just like any other 4th grade kid….excited to be outside, see some trout, hold a toad, learn about the river, and try to catch a fish.

More than a decade ago, Postville is remembered for a historic ICE raid at the Agriprocessors, Inc on May 12, 2008. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postville_raid)
I don’t want to go into too much detail revisiting every aspect of that story (which the person ultimately responsible was commuted…see comments below), but you can read more details at the link above. That unfortunate event tore this once thriving rural Iowa community apart. Ten years later, Postville has never fully recovered.

Ironically, 2008 also marked the year flood waters caused by heavy rains and widespread manipulation of the Iowa Landscape resulted in untold economic and personal losses. Catastrophic flooding on the Turkey River caused many lives to change here at the hatchery, down river in Elkader, as well as numerous communities along the Cedar River including Charles City, Waterloo, and Cedar Rapids. Ten years later, these communities have made amazing comebacks, but have never fully recovered.

The town of Postville had a different kind of disaster compared to the floods that tore apart communities and cities throughout Iowa. But just like those flood-impacted towns, what happened to the many families, community, and main street businesses in Postville was just as difficult to overcome.

As Iowa Governor, I want to bring better awareness to the plight of those families impacted by circumstances, which are often times out of their control or caused by an employer offering and assisting with unethical employment opportunities. I want to ensure opportunities exist for families to have a fair road map for a legal means to gain citizenship, support their families, fill needed work vacancies, and become important creative members of our diverse Iowa Communities. I also want to ensure all members of our communities are treated fairly and with respect. I also want to ensure opportunities exist for employers seeking hard working dedicated employees to fill needed vacancies.

We can all take part in making Iowa a great place to live, where a 4th grader can have a chance to be a kid no matter where they call home.
